These supplements were carefully selected to give your newborn a healthy start in life. The Vitamin K emulsion is for those who choose not to get the Vitamin K shot at birth. It is imperative for babies to have some form of Vitamin K on board in the first few months of life to prevent Intracranial Hemorrhage (brain bleed). Babies are born with immature livers and this can lead to coagulation issues. Coagulation means that the blood clots so a person doesn’t bleed to death. Immature livers don’t make enough vitamin K, even if mom has tons of it in her diet. And low levels of vitamin K put babies at risk for bleeds in the brain. The dosing recommendations here are based on the Stanford Protocol.

Vitamin D is essential for newborn wellness: brain development, bones, teeth, immune system and gut health. The current AAP recommendations are that nursed babies take a minimum of 400IU daily. A nursing mom has to take a minimum of 6400IU of vitamin D herself to be able to provide the 400IU to the baby. Formula-fed babies should take vitamin D supplement until they are taking 32 ounces of formula every day

The formulation of Vitamin D in this bundle has 1000IU per DROP. Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, you can skip days. I recommend that babies take this formulation Mon-Th and skip Fri-Sun. The dose evens out to about 400IU per day.

A probiotic is essential for all newborns regardless of how they were birthed. Many studies have shown that babies lack some essential good bacteria from their gut. One of the most important gut bacteria for babies that has been shown to decrease their risk of developing chronic disease later in life is B Infantis.  Early use of probiotics in life may reduce the risk of ADHD and other neurologic conditions as well.
